~ JOY ~

Joy comes to us in the ordinary moments.

We risk missing out when we're too busy chasing down the extraordinary.

From Rev. Christen's Desk

Dear Epiphany Parish,

I don't know about you, but I don't like to wait. I can be impatient and I like things to happen quickly.

However, in Advent, we are all called to wait, to hope, to prepare, and to pray.   It's a time to slow down in anticipation of Christ's coming into the world. In a world of instant gratification, to have a time set aside for waiting seems like a radical thing.

How have you been waiting this Advent season?   Have you been setting aside some time for prayer each day? Have you been lighting an advent wreath each night at dinner? Or have you had some other practice that helps you to wait?

Last week and this week, John the Baptist makes an appearance in our Gospel passages. John's presence in this story reminds us to, "Prepare the way of the Lord!" The Messiah is coming-prepare, wait, and hope.

The Prayer Book of John the Baptist

Is written on
locusts' wings.

Is stained with
wild honey.

Is buckled by
baptismal waters.

Is mostly
pages of wilderness
where prayers are formed
not from what is present
but from what has been
worn away.

Is inscribed
with an ancient path.

Is waiting.

Is falling open
toward the light.

- Prayer Book of John the Baptist © Jan L. Richardson

Peace in Christ,

 Rev. Christen

Advent is Here...

This past Sunday was the second Sunday of Advent!  Advent is a time of waiting, but we are not sitting by idly waiting - we have been busy!  We have decorated the church and made Advent wreathes to enjoy at home  We have been shopping - gathering Gift for Kids.  The Narthex was full of packages which will be delivered to that organization this afternoon.

There are still many great offerings to take part in over the next few weeks.  We hope you will continue to celebrate with us.

Sunday, December 16 ~ Following the 10:00am service Rev. Christen and George Ford will be leading the first of two Advent forums.

Sunday, December 23 ~ Following the 10:00am service Rev. Christen and George Ford will be leading the second Advent forum.

Monday, December 24 ~ We will hold two Christmas Eve services: A family service at 5:00pm and a Candlelight Service at 10:00pm.

Tuesday, December 25 ~ we will have one service at 10:00am to celebrate the joyous birth of Jesus!  The service will begin with a Christmas hymn sing at the piano and we will have a hot chocolate-to-go bar in the Narthex following the service.

Gifts for Kids Giving Tree

To the brave among you who ventured into toy stores and children's departments - you have surely made Christmas a happy day for the children assigned to Epiphany.

Your generosity is truly appreciated.

Thank you!  Gracias!  Dank  e!  Merci!  Thank you!

Stewardship Update & Plea

For those who have sent in a pledge, THANK YOU! Your continued support of Epiphany is greatly appreciated!

The Vestry is in the midst of budget planning for next year and information regarding pledges is critical to the planning process and the proper stewardship of our finances.

If you have not yet had to opportunity to send in your pledge, it is not too late! You can either mail your pledge card to the church or place it in the collection plate on Sunday (note pledge cards can be found in the pews).

We are currently at 83% of our goal and still need some more pledges to reach the total pledges we received last year.

If you have not received a stewardship packet (or misplaced it) and would like one, please contact Susan Cosman at susan.cosman@verizon.net or 508-668-3882. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about anything in the life of our parish, please do not hesitate to speak with any of the vestry members.

Epiphany Pageant News

Our traditional Epiphany Pageant will be held on Sunday, January 6 during the 10:00am service.

We are looking for 12 children and youth who are interested in participating.  These are all non-speaking roles!  Please let Jen Hee or Rev. Christen know if your young family members are interested  in participating.

Weekly Announcements

"A thrill of Hope..." an Advent Bible Study in word and art. ~ George Ford and Rev. Christen will be co-leading a two-part Advent Bible Study that will meet on Sunday, December 16 and Sunday, December 23 after the 10am service. In this study we will be looking at the familiar passages of the Christmas story in a new light. We will study the scripture passages together, and then we will watch a brief video presentation that looks at each story through the work of the American artist John August Swanson. We hope that you will join us this Advent to see how the Christmas story continues to speak a new word to our lives today. To see examples of John August Swanson's work that we will be studying, you can visit: http://www.johnaugustswanson.com/default.cfm/PID%3d1.2-4.html
